Hailing from the suburbs of Atlanta, the production stylings of Valiant Horizon's newest artist Ultraloner is decidedly lo-fi. This sound brings to mind the early days of synthpop and the 8-bit soundtracks of classic arcade games of yesteryear. The indie sensibility is best explained by the fact that Ultraloner (or Bill Trieshmann) is also one half of Atlanta rock band The Six Sixes whose passion for lo-fi production and pop is well established. Ultraloner's apparent love of the spartan pop sensibilities of Kraut rock pioneers Kraftwerk is best represented in a track like "Future is electronic." While the EP's lead track "Wandering Downs" recalls the almost symphonic swoosh of French electronic composer Jean Micheal Jarre's work in the 1970's. "Joystick" is a purely nostalgic retro arcade romp and "Rave On" sounds like a long lost Daft Punk jam. Because the styles vary so much within this EP, it is perhaps fitting the title is "Wandering Downs."
